At the request of Monseigneur Gilles Barthe, who was at the time the bishop of Fréjus and Toulon, the monastery of Notre-Dame du Torrent de Vie was begun in 1978 under very modest conditions in the wild scrubland of Provence, on a plot of land that adjoins the famous Roman abbey of Thoronet. The monastery church was constructed according to an ancient technique with unbaked red bricks which were made by hand with the soil of the countryside. It was consecrated by Monseigneur Dominique Rey in 2007. For thirty years, the monastic sisters lived in little caravans (trailers) that are used on construction sites. There they lived their life of prayer and of work in a true, though often precarious solitude. Today the cloister of the hermitages of the “Upper House” is complete.
