80 kilometers south of Paris, near Nemours, in a beautiful forest of birch and pine trees — a paradise for squirrels — of sand and of heather, the monastery of Notre-Dame de Bethléem has the unique caracteristic of being composed of a community of sisters who live exclusively in the “Upper House”; the “Lower House” constitutes a mother house for the “lay persons of Bethlehem”. Some of the lay persons live there permanently, others visit for weekends or come for long periods of retreat. Because of its proximity to Paris and its suburbs, the community is particularly aware of the necessity of keeping vigil in prayer.
