Situated at the southern tip of Spain, on the border of Europe, Africa and the Near East, rich in traditions which marked this land of Andalousie during the course of history, the Carthusian monastery of Jerez is one of the jewels of the Province of Cadix. In 1478, Don Alvaro Obertos de Valeto began the construction of this Carthusian monastery at the site of a hermitage dedicated to Nuestra Señora de la Defensión in memory of the Virgin’s intervention to save the Christians of this region. Wars and various events of history drove the Carthusians out of their monastery several times. After their final return in 1948, they undertook the restoration of some of the buildings that had been abandoned for more than one century. In 2002, at the request of John Paul II, they left Jerez in order to begin a foundation in the young church of Korea. Our monastic Family was then asked to preserve the tradition of prayer and of solitude in this monastery conceived according to the wisdom of Saint Bruno.
