The monastic Family of Bethlehem was erected by pontifical right on October 6th, 1998 by a decree approved by his Holiness the Pope John Paul II.

Monseigneur Lamy

Monseigneur Lamy, bishop of Sens, welcomed the first community in his diocese, at Chamvres, from February 1951 until 1954.

Monseigneur Renard

Cardinal Renard was bishop of Versailles from 1953 to 1967 and he was charged with ecclesiastic responsibility for our community.

Monseigneur Bontems

Monseigneur Bontems, bishop of Chambéry, Maurienne and Tarentaise from 1960 to 1985 received ecclesiastic responsibility for our community when Cardinal Renard was named archbishop of Lyon.

Monseigneur Matagrin

Monseigneur Matagrin, bishop of Grenoble from 1969 to 1989 received ecclesiastic responsibility for our community in 1976 when the foundation of the brothers was begun.

Cardinal Lustiger

Cardinal Jean-Marie Lustiger, archbishop of Paris, accompanied, supported and helped the monastic Family of Bethlehem and offered us his loyal friendship.

Cardinal Errázuriz

Monseigneur Errázuriz was the secretary of the Congregation for the Institutes of Consecrated Life and for the Societies of Apostolic Life from 1991 to 1996. He welcomed the general prior and prioress in the process of the pontifical erection of our monastic Family.

Monseigneur Mullor

Monseigneur Justo Mullor García was President of the Pontifical Ecclesiastic Academy, entrusted with the formation of nuncios, from 2000 to 2007. He is a very loyal friend of our monasteries.


Patriarch Athenagoras — Geneva

Patriarch Athenagoras, the Orthodox Patriarch of Constantinople, came to Geneva in June of 1967. During a meeting on the subject of the unity of Christian churches, he encountered Sister Marie.

Visit of the Monastery of Saint Patapios

In order to discover eastern monasticism, Sister Marie and Sister Samuel stayed at the Monastery of Saint Patapios, near Corinth, in March of 1968.

Father Amphilokios — Patmos

Father Amphilokios, starets of the monastery of Patmos, blessed Sister Samuel and Sister Marie, who visited the island of Patmos in following in the footsteps of Saint John the Evangelist who received at Patmos the message written in the Book of Revelation.

Father Georges Drobot

Father George Drobot, a Russian Orthodox priest, is a famous iconographer who, over the course of several years, taught the sisters how to write icons at the monastery of Pugny, where he stayed with his family in the summertime.

Father Boris Bobrinskoi

Father Boris Bobrinskoi, priest of the Francophone parish of the Holy Trinity (rue Daru) in Paris and the most senior member of the Institute Saint Serge is a loyal friend of our monastic Family.

Cardinal Garonne — Monseigneur Aemilianos Timiadis

Cardinal Garonne, prefect for the Congregation of Catholic Education and president of the Pontifical Counsel for Culture, and Monseigneur Aemilianos Timiadis, delegate of Patriarch Athenagoras for the Ecumenical Counsel of the churches in Geneva, met Sister Marie at the monastery of Pugny.

Father Sophrony, disciple of starets Silouane of Mount Athos, visited the monastery of Montsvoirons.
